How it works
San Antonio Tankless Water Heater Basics: How a Continuous Water Heater Works
At a glance
- A tankless water heater heats water only when a tap opens, so it never runs out.
- It is sized by flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM) and temperature rise, not gallons stored.
- Gas units often need a larger gas line and new venting; whole-house electric units need several high-amp circuits.

A tankless water heater, also called a continuous water heater, heats water as it flows through a heat exchanger. When you open a hot tap, a flow sensor fires the burner or electric elements, and water comes out hot for as long as the tap is open.
Because there is no tankless hot water tank to keep warm, there is no standby heat loss, and the unit hangs on a wall instead of taking up floor space. With regular descaling, many tankless units last 20 years or more.
San Antonio's incoming water is warmer than in northern cities for much of the year. That means a smaller temperature rise, so a given unit can deliver more gallons per minute here. Winter inlet temperatures drop, so installers size for the coldest months.

Instant Water Heater vs Tank Water Heater
An instant water heater suits households that run out of hot water, want to free up space, or plan to stay in the home long enough to benefit from the longer life. A tank suits simple swaps and homes where the gas line or electrical panel cannot support a tankless unit.
| Tankless (instant) | Tank | |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water supply | Continuous, limited by GPM | Limited by tank size and recovery |
| Space | Wall-mounted, about the size of a suitcase | Floor space for a 30 to 80 gallon tank |
| Typical lifespan | 20 years or more with descaling | About 8 to 12 years |
| Upfront cost | Higher, especially for conversions | Lower |
| Hard-water care | Descale the heat exchanger about once a year | Flush sediment about once a year |
| Power outage | Gas units need electricity to run | Gas tanks usually keep working |

Fuel type
Electric Tankless Water Heater or Tankless Gas Hot Water Heater?
Fuel decides how much hot water a tankless unit can make and what your home needs to support it.
Electric tankless water heater
No venting or gas line. Whole-house units draw a lot of current and often need two to four dedicated circuits and enough panel capacity.
Tankless gas hot water heater
Higher flow rates for larger homes. Usually needs a larger gas line, a dedicated vent and a condensate drain on condensing models.
Installation
Tankless Water Heater Installation San Antonio TX: What It Takes
Tankless water heater installation is more involved than a tank swap. An installer checks four things first:
- Flow demand: how many showers, faucets and appliances may run at once, in GPM.
- Gas or electric capacity: gas line size and meter capacity, or panel amperage and available breaker space.
- Venting: a route for stainless steel or PVC venting, or an outdoor-rated unit.
- Water quality: isolation valves for descaling, and whether a softener or scale filter makes sense with San Antonio's hard water.
Outdoor tankless units are common here. They need power for their built-in freeze protection, which matters during hard freezes like the February 2021 winter storm.

What Drives Tankless Water Heater Cost? Instantaneous Water Heater Pricing Factors
Tankless water heater cost depends mostly on what has to change in the home. A replacement of an existing tankless unit is the simplest job. Converting from a tank adds gas line upsizing or electrical work, new venting and new mounting.
Instantaneous water heater pricing also depends on capacity, condensing versus non-condensing design, indoor or outdoor mounting, and brand. Each contractor quotes their own work after seeing the home; we do not set prices.
The tankless cost page breaks down each factor.
Brands
Rinnai Tankless Water Heater, Navien Tankless Water Heater or Rheem?
Most tankless installs in San Antonio use one of these brands. Installers often specialize in one or two.
Upkeep
Tankless Water Heater Maintenance and Repair
Tankless water heater maintenance in San Antonio mainly means descaling. Hard water leaves scale in the heat exchanger, which reduces flow and triggers error codes. Most manufacturers recommend flushing with a descaling solution about once a year, and more often with very hard water. See tankless repair and maintenance for common error codes and fixes.
Homeowner questions
Tankless Water Heaters San Antonio FAQs
Is a tankless water heater worth it in San Antonio?
It can be if you run out of hot water, want to save space, or plan to stay long enough to benefit from the 20-year-plus lifespan. The upfront cost is higher, especially for a conversion, and hard water means yearly descaling.
What size tankless water heater do I need?
Add up the flow of fixtures that may run at once. A shower uses about 2 GPM and a faucet about 1 to 1.5 GPM. Many 2 to 3 bathroom homes need a gas unit rated around 7 to 10 GPM. The installer sizes it for winter inlet temperatures.
Does a tankless water heater work during a power outage?
No. Gas tankless units need electricity for the fan, controls and igniter. Outdoor units also need power for freeze protection, so a freeze plan matters.
Can a tankless unit be installed outside?
Yes. Outdoor models are common in San Antonio because they avoid indoor venting. They include freeze protection that needs power, and some owners add drain-down valves for hard freezes.
Will I need a bigger gas line?
Often. Gas tankless units can draw several times the gas of a tank heater, and many homes need a larger line from the meter. The installer checks line size, length and meter capacity.
