How it works
At a glance
A heat pump hot water heater works like an air conditioner in reverse. A small compressor on top of the tank pulls heat from the surrounding air and moves it into the water. Backup electric elements take over when demand is high.
Because moving heat takes much less energy than making it, a heat pump unit uses a fraction of the electricity of a standard electric tank.
Hot climate
A hybrid water heater does especially well in San Antonio because garages stay warm most of the year. Warm air gives the heat pump more heat to work with, and the cool, dry air it releases can make a hot garage a little more comfortable.
In winter, the unit leans more on its backup elements when the garage is cold.
Placement
Most units need several hundred cubic feet of air, or a louvered door or ducting in a closet.
Hybrid tanks are taller than standard tanks. Measure ceiling height in closets.
The heat pump produces condensate that needs a drain or a pump.
Most need a 240-volt circuit; some 120-volt plug-in models are designed for easier replacements.
Incentives
Utility rebates and tax incentives for heat pump water heaters change often. Check CPS Energy's current rebate programs and current federal rules before you buy, and ask the installer which models qualify.
Homeowner questions
Yes, and well. Warm garages give the heat pump plenty of heat to draw from for most of the year.
It makes a fan and compressor sound similar to a small window air conditioner. Garages and utility rooms are the usual locations.
Only if the closet has enough air volume or louvered doors or ducting. The installer checks the manufacturer's requirements.
